Instructor– BCRPA Certified Group Fitness Instructor
About Her Class:
My Zumba® class is a mix of spicy, sweaty & cardio dance. My class is very Latin in style; where shimmying, singing and laughing is very much a part of the workout. I use the same approach in my Zumba® Gold class too, just with lower impact moves!
Why She Started Teaching Zumba®:
I have been dancing since I was a little girl as it is part of our culture. I began doing Peruvian Folklore dancing when I was seven years old and it is one of my passions. When I heard that Zumba® was a Dance-Fitness program based on Latin Music, I was like a kid in a candy store! It sounded so good and tempting that it was impossible not to try it. I thought having a workout dance class for a job would be such a blessing and I went for it!
What Makes Zumba® Special For Her:
It brings so many beautiful things to my life: Being able to share the warmness and spice of my culture, heritage and language with people. Being able to see a smile during a class is so priceless. Learning and knowing about every single individual, their reason for being there and enjoying absolutely every different personality and what makes people unique. I feel so honoured having every single person join my classes, whether it is frequently or once in awhile. When I started I never thought that Zumba® would bring so much joy and also a community with special friends!
What Would Surprise Her Participants The Most?
Even though I am certified Travel Agent I have never pursued it as a career as I was not passionate about it. I have been an animal lover since I was a teenager; I have been involved with Peruvian independent & group rescue organizations, supporting causes for animal rights in my country. That is why when I came to Canada I started as a volunteer at the SPCA and then got certified as a dog groomer.
How Long Does It Take Her To Learn Choreography?
When I started as an instructor, I can honestly say that my first song took me about nine hours to learn! These days it takes me 2-2.5 hours after I know the song. How I learn choreography is by first playing the music in the car while I am driving, I listen to it 20 times or more, until I have it stuck in my head. Next, I watch the choreography video 5-7 times until I have the steps and movements memorized. Then, I draw the steps and count onto paper (I am sure I am the only one doing this…LOL) and finally I practice in front of the mirror until I think it is at 100%!
What Is She Most Proud Of?
Being able to give not just receive. I have been adopting street dogs (instead of buying them) since I was very young which I am happy about. Also, the feeling of doing what I think is right for people and animals that don’t have many opportunities to change their lives and help them feel proud and cared for.
What Is Something That Amazes Her?
The capacity of every single human to be able to change the day/moment/life of someone with a good action, word, showing they care, or a kind expression. We all have that capacity and it is a choice to make it happen or not.
What Is Something She Needs Everyday?
To tell my son and my dog that I love them and being able to kiss and hug them too, I am addicted to them!
What Does She Like To Eat And/Or Drink At A Party?
There is no way I will love anything more than my Peruvian food-in fact Peru is one of the top food travel destinations in the world (even though I am not the best ambassador to show it!). I also LOVE fruit juices or smoothies, as some of you must know already I don’t drink any alcohol.
What Is Her Favorite Thing To Do That Is Not Zumba®?
Art and drawing are another way I express myself. I love putting onto paper the beauty of what my eyes can see and what my mind thinks, I especially like drawing faces and spaces. But definitely something that I Love to do every day that is not Zumba® is the time to walk my dog, while being able to listen to some soft music or just simply hearing the sound of nature, just enjoying an easy walk and the peace of BEAUTIFUL VICTORIA. If my son comes with us for those walks (which are not very often) then it is almost perfect! If my Mother comes with the 3 of us then that is perfection! It is such a treat to have that time to think and relax and share it with my loved ones.
