How the Herky-Jerky Chicken Crossed the Dance Floor & Became A Zumba Instructor!

By Claire

I thought I’d start the official Studio VZF blog with a little history of how this venture came to be.

I discovered Zumba Fitness while on a Mexican holiday in March 2009 and although I had no dance background and moved like a herky-jerky chicken, I loved how it made me feel joyful, goofy and giddy all at the same time. I guess that as a just-turned 43 year old, I was ready to let go of worrying what other people thought about me.

So there I was in an outdoor fitness palapa, in full public view, trying desperately to make my hips shake and swivel like the 20-something instructor from Brazil who clearly came out of the womb sambaing and I had a vision! “We need Zumba in Victoria and I’m going to become a Zumba instructor!”

I was already a fitness instructor teaching aerobics, step, and total body conditioning classes in fitness clubs throughout Victoria so the addition of Zumba Fitness to my repertoire wasn’t that much of a stretch except I couldn’t dance my way out of a wet paper bag. I moved with as much fluidity as a piece of wood. What was I thinking? In my “real job” I was a human resources consultant – I was the expert who assessed and hired candidates based on their abilities to do the essential duties for the job. So, let’s face it, at the time, I did not have the requisite body-moving skills for the job of Zumba instructor but something in my heart and soul whispered, “who cares?”

When our vacation was over and we were back in Victoria, one of the first things I did was consult Google on “how to become a Zumba instructor.” To my shock and horror, I found out that the only Basic 1 Zumba Instructor Training scheduled for Western Canada was in Pitt Meadows and taking place 2 weeks to the day. I couldn’t dither, I couldn’t second-guess … I had to make a decision. So, I took a deep breath, gave them my credit card info and I signed up.

This story will continue in the next post to our blog but remember, every accomplishment starts with the decision to try. Looking back, I am so grateful that I had the courage to make the decision to sign up for the instructor training, and I am equally grateful for your decision to make Zumba and Studio VZF a part of your life.

See you on the dance floor …
